07/08/2009:
* Last night’s changes to kernel config gave problems with nv drivers
* X works without nv drivers but installing nv drivers fail.
* So I am going to start again from last good known config with smaller set of changes
* Time to boot without nv drivers was less 15 seconds and Disk throughput was 77MB/s
09/08/2009:
* Restarted with last good known config from 01/08/2009
* Installed & Used ccache to speedup
* Quite a few changes made after 4 builds, still everything does work
* check out the bzr branch to get the latest config
* However, no performance improvement to boot speed
* Tried to see if SREADAHEAD from moblin project does any good, but added 7 seconds to boot, I think need more tweaking so removed it
* Wanted to put CONCURRENCY=shell but couldn’t dare, cos it will mean changes to lot of scripts
* Back to custom kernel, made lot of changes, like disabled floppy drive, remove few drivers, changed dell_laptop and dell_wmi to be built-in, everything works fine
* Disabled Integrated webcam on purpose
* Forgot to commit changes to BZR but will do tonight after few more changes
12/08/2009:
* Quite a few changes have been made
* Removed a lot of unwanted drivers
* Built tg3 andwlan drviers into the kernel
* Added the uvc drivers back as module and webcam now works
* All the builds went ok – 2.8mb kernel image and 4.1mb initrd
* Get a message “modprobe FATAL…cant load modules.dep” but everything boots and works ok
* Still some conflict with sound oss and alsa drivers which was present in the upstream kernel also
* Cant get BT to work
* Still a lot of modules in the list, most of them may not be required
Nonetheless its a really good progress, ready for A4 release tomorrow.
Bzr branch committed tonight so you can get a download of it and compile, or drop me a line if you use UbuntuOne then I can share the packages (11MB total).
19/08/2009:
* Yesterday I have released the milestone for Alpha 4
* The compile method works with 2.6.31-6 kernel
* Close to getting initrd being removed completely, only few more modules left now.
